Effective Counseling Skills

New!

The examination manual for the National Registry of Counselors, this book gives away the secrets of effective counselors and therapists. The practical skills and concepts distilled in the present form, are the contributions of countless colleagues and clients who over the years have challenged the creative energies of the author. Effective Counseling Skills is designed to achieve the primary purpose of making counseling skills public knowledge in the belief that the health of society is improved when counseling is known to the most people. The style of the manual is conversational with numerous examples of the wording of therapeutic statements. Major topic areas include an explanation of the client's personal history, how to begin and deepen the counseling process, helping the client learn healthy ways of relating, skills for healing grief, working with couples, as well as practical ways to manage a counseling practice, and much more.

New! The Lost Mystery of Baptism

Bibliographical references and index.
Library of Congress Control Number: 2009902959

Where were the 3,000 people baptized on the day of Pentecost when the church first started in Acts 2:41?
Where is the oldest known baptistery dating from the first century AD?
What is that large oval hole in the floor of St. Peters basilica underneath the baptismal font?
Why are the early baptismal basins so large?

The original practice and meaning of baptism as the central experience of personal conversion to Jesus Christ, has become a lost mystery to the vast majority of people in the world. From the early centuries of the common era until the 13th century, changes occurred that would leave baptism almost unrecognizable to its first participants.

This groundbreaking volume containing much new information, combines a look at baptism from two perspectives: the biblical teaching followed by the physical evidence of the places of baptism in the ancient and medieval world. Descriptions of baptismal basins are given for the period extending from the 1st to the 15th centuries in Europe, the Mediterranean region and mostly Italy. Included wherever possible are the dimensions of baptismal basins, the centuries constructed or in use, the presence of inscriptions, and locations of buildings housing the basins.

Personal Counseling Journal

By Daniel Keeran

The purpose of the Personal Counseling Journal is for you to record reflections of counseling sessions as they occur. The journal begins with the Life Story Questionnaire, the personal assessment in which the details of your life experience can be disclosed. Although this may be uncomfortable, completing your Life Story Questionnaire will add to your recovery process.

The next section is the Counseling Session Journal in which you write about your experiences during the counseling sessions as well as any assignments suggested by your counselor. The parts of each session entry relate to emotions explored, insights gained, and new decisions and behaviors acquired.

The Therapeutic Exercises in the Appendix can be used to facilitate your recovery during the counseling process. The last section on Creative Solution Development is a structured approach to creating solutions and taking action on any kind of issue or challenge you are facing in your life.

If There Is No God

Meditations On Believing

By Daniel Keeran

208 pages, with extensive bibliography on theism and atheism.

Atheism is more than a belief in no god or gods. Take the unbelief test. Do you believe:
1. humans have souls?
2. there is an afterlife?
3. humans have greater intrinsic value than other life forms?
4. objective free moral choice exists in humans apart from genetic or instinctual factors?
5. there is accountability after death?
6. there is objective meaning to human life?

These are some of over 50 questions raised in "If There Is No God: Meditations On Believing." Whether or not you believe there is a god, this book will challenge you to think a little deeper than you have before. The author encourages every reader to search for the truth and meditate on fundamental questions of human existence.

Ancient and Medieval Baptismal Fonts

By Daniel Keeran

The photographs selected for this volume were personally taken by the author with the exception of those used by permission as indicated. There is very little available to English readers on the subject of early and medieval baptisteries and fonts.

This brief introductory volume of selected baptismal fonts is published in the hope that further interest will be stimulated to explore baptismal history and development. Important new information is given on what may be the earliest known baptismal basin dating from the first century in Milan as well as the mysteious basin cut into the floor of Saint Peters basilica in Rome. The connection is made between the mikvah ritual purification pools of Jerusalem and the development of baptismal fonts.

After completing research at the Bibliotecha Apostolica Vaticana in Rome and at the American Academy Library in Rome, an itinerary was planned for visiting the sites. Listed in alphabetical order by city, the largest number of early baptismal basins is found in Italy with a sampling from other countries.

Radical Christianity

Peace and Justice in the New Testament

By Daniel Keeran

206 pages, bibliography, index, biblical references

The volume is divided into three parts: the first addressing the radical principles of personal finance, the second pertaining to the non-violent way of the cross, and the third looking briefly at specific ideas created to live out the meaning of the crucified life. The second part includes a chapter on practical approaches for peacemaking in relationships as well as a concordance of words in scripture related to pacifism intended to assist the reader in further study of the biblical text. In the application of radical Christianity, there are various dangers and pitfalls addressed by the author.

The radical teaching encourages an individual life style process. Jesus did not come to establish a political or economic system, but to transform the person, as he said: "the kingdom of God is within you" and "my kingdom is not of this world."
